Since I was young, I was told natural beauty is the best beauty. Thanks to my Dad, I didn’t wear makeup until I was 18 so my skin had some breathing room. But I didn’t fully understand why he was against it. He’d always say, “I can’t recognize you with makeup on” but I think he secretly felt like his two daughters were growing up too quickly. So as the first child who felt the need to break down the doors for my siblings, I painted my face with primer, concealer, foundation, powder, blush and mascara. I’d do this on a regular to daily basis. And although it’s not a lot compared to a lot of the “Instagram” makeup you see where people are highlighting their face until it shines like a light bulb, I felt like I was hiding under a layer of chemicals and my skin wasn’t able to breathe properly. Eventually I wondered what those toxic chemicals were doing to the largest organ of my body: my skin. Those chemicals were being absorbed into my pores, travelling into my bloodstream impacting my other organs. As a noticeable result, I saw a lot more skin blemishes and hyper pigmentation developed over time. I believe this would not have occurred if I didn’t apply so much makeup.
So I began to research on green beauty, I wanted to try more vegan and cruelty-free products. I started with changing my shampoos and hand soaps to chemical free ones that are vegan ones free of formaldehyde, sulfates and other deadly chemicals. I currently use affordable ones by the Live Clean line. Then I switched my lip balm (something we consume into our bodies by mouth regularly!) to an organic, vegan and cruelty free one by Hurraw. Then from that into cosmetics that are paraben and sulfate free. Finally I went full force into organic, vegan, cruelty free beauty for most of my makeup regime. On days when I don’t have to see people aside from my family, I’ll go makeup free. So you’re probably asking a few of the same questions I had too before I started to make the switch and I’ve answered them here below:
WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS OF GREEN BEAUTY THAT YOU’VE NOTICED?
There are so many!
Little to no chemicals being absorbed into my body
They also nourish and heal your skin as they contain plant-based ingredients
Made of pesticide free, organic ingredients
Not made of animals and not tested on animals
Healthier for your skin, which is the largest organ of your body
I found a peace of mind in using green beauty since I wasn’t covering my face in chemicals
I also found that my acne healed faster because these products are made of natural ingredients
DO GREEN COSMETICS HAVE STAYING POWER?
Yes! I remember I used to think that green makeup had little to no staying powder and that they’d rub off after an hour or so. But you’d be surprise that my little W3LL PEOPLE concealer had a lot of staying power. It was almost difficult to scrub off completely with soap! It all depends on the brand so I’d recommend testing it at the store if you can and seeing how long it lasts before investing in green beauty. Some brands that I wear for work (8 + 3 hours commute time) are:
IS GREEN BEAUTY COSTLY?
Green Beauty is pretty reasonably priced and nowhere near as high as luxury cosmetics. However, they’re definitely not drug-store pricing where you can find concealer for under $20 CAD.
A concealer from Sappho Organics is $32 CAD and their cream foundation is $62 CAD
Hurraw Lip Balm is priced at $4.99 which isn’t too pricey in my opinion!
Rose Water toner by Leven Rose is $19.37 CAD off Amazon
Keep in mind you are paying for cosmetics that are the next step up from cosmetics that contain chemicals and toxins. In addition to that, most of these companies care deeply about the environment sourcing the highest quality organic ingredients. So you’re paying for quality, which benefits the health of your skin in the end. These companies also prioritize cruelty-free testing, ethical sourcing and fair-trade, ensuring no animals are harmed in their testing, their employees and their providers are treated fairly.
WHERE CAN I BUY GREEN COSMETICS?
You can purchase many of them online but a great place to start is by visiting THE DETOX MARKET. They sell their products in-store or online and are my favourite green beauty stop. They started in LA and made their way up to Toronto (two locations – one on King and Spadina and the other in Yorkville).
Once you become familiar with all the green cosmetic lines, you can purchase off their company’s direct website. But I love shopping at the Detox Market because it’s one stop shopping for all my needs and if you purchase over $100 it’s free shipping via Canada Post. Plus they always throw in a free sample and sometimes those samples are a good size. And they hand write a cute little note.

DO GREEN COSMETICS SMELL FUNNY?
Not really. It also depends on the brand. I’ll admit my Vapour Beauty foundation has a more herbal smell but nothing off putting or overpowering! Once it’s been applied, it’s gone! My W3LL People concealer, powder and blush are scentless. So all in all, it’s not definitely enough to deter me from using green beauty or experiencing the benefits of it.

IS IT WORTH IT?
100 times yes! For the amount of worry of chemicals slowly seeping into my skin into my organs, I’m so relieved that I have healthy, clean and nourishing products on my body. I hope you give them a shot and see what they can do for your beauty and health. But most importantly, the key to natural beauty is what you put inside of your body. Nothing topical can completely heal blemishes on your face, that’s just a quick fix. Start from the inside and then work your way out.
