What are Hoisin Baked Ribs?
Hoisin Baked Ribs are pork ribs glazed in a sweet simple sauce made of hoisin sauce, brown sugar, honey or maple syrup, sesame oil and yellow mustard. These hoisin baked ribs are so tender, juicy and they literally fall off the bone. You can use the same glaze for long or short ribs if you wish. I love serving these ribs as a main dish with white rice and leafy greens as a simple delicious meal that hits the spot. It's great for the whole family to enjoy for dinner!
Growing up, these Chinese Hoisin Ribs are a Chinese dish that my mom used to make at least once a month and it was a hit in our family. We loved them so much! In fact, sometimes there wasn't enough to go around because we would gobble them up so quickly! Unfortunately you won't find this Chinese dish served at many Chinese restaurants or for Chinese takeout. But this is such an easy and simple ribs recipe to make at home and most of the ingredients are accessible!
Ingredients
You will need the following ingredients for my hoisin glazed ribs recipe. Please scroll down to below recipe card for exact measurements.
- Rack of pork spare ribs
Glaze
- Hoisin sauce: This adds a caramelized sweetness to our sauce. It's often used in Chinese cooking, think of it like a Chinese BBQ sauce. Do not confuse this sauce with Oyster sauce despite the similar texture and color. Oyster sauce is saltier and not sweet.
- Honey or maple syrup
- Brown sugar
- Sesame oil
- Yellow mustard: in the liquid form
How to make Hoisin Baked Ribs
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
- In a small bowl, combine glaze ingredients until combined. Set aside.
- In a large pot filled with enough water, bring to a boil on medium-high heat. Carefully lower pork spare ribs and boil for 5 minutes. Then strain the ribs in a colander.
- Place ribs onto a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper with meatier side up and bone side down.
- Brush glaze over ribs, reserving the rest for later as a basting sauce.
- Bake ribs for 30 minutes.
- Remove from oven and baste with sauce. Bake for another 15 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and transfer to a cutting board. Allow this to rest for 10 minutes. Slice into smaller pieces. Enjoy!
Note: Most Asian grocery stores will carry most of the Asian specific ingredients.
Storage & Reheating
This dish will last up to 4 days stored in an airtight container in the fridge. To reheat, microwave for 2-3 minutes or reheat in the oven at 350 degrees F for 5-10 minutes until hot.

Hi! Recipe looks amazing! I have ribs that are pre cut into smaller pieces, does that vary the cooking time? Boiling time and/or oven time?

Ribs are always a treat in our house. I usually go for BBQ sauce, but I love hoisin sauce, so I'll need to give these ribs a try some time!
