Apple cinnamon wontons are made of wonton skins filled apples, cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar. They taste like mini apple pies and are a great way to enjoy apple season!

They are very addictive and great for all to enjoy, from kids to adults. This recipe is a between American and Chinese cuisine. The filling is Western-inspired, while the wonton is often used in Asian cooking for wonton soups.

Together they create these little pockets of joy, especially they are straight out of the oven. This quick and easy recipe is fun to make if you want to get the kids involved.

I loved developing this apple recipe as it's out of the ordinary and forces me to get creative as a recipe developer!

    Ingredients & Substitutes

Please scroll down to below recipe card for exact measurements.

    • Wonton Wrappers: these are yellow 3 x 3-inch square-shaped wrappers that are made of eggs, wheat flour and water. They're sold in the refrigerated section at the Asian grocery stores.
    • Pink Lady Apples: or substitute with McIntosh apples, Gala Apples or Honey Crisp.
    • White Granulated Sugar: or substitute with light or dark brown sugar.
    • Ground Nutmeg
    • Ground Cinnamon
    • Cornstarch: or substitute with potato starch.
    • Milk: or substitute with plain oat milk, almond milk, or macadamia nut milk if you're dairy-free. Avoid using coconut milk or soy milk as they're a bit overpowering.
    • Neutral oil: like avocado oil, sunflower oil, grapeseed oil, peanut oil, vegetable oil or canola oil with a high smoke point. Avoid olive oil that has a low smoke point.

    Expert Tips

    • Finely dice the apples so they will be easy to wrap in the wonton wrapper.
    • Don't skip the cornstarch because this helps to make the apple filling more moist and stickier so it's easier to wrap the wontons.
    • Don't over fill the wontons with filling or it'll be tricky to seal them.
    • Use a silicone brush or a pastry brush to lightly brush milk onto each wonton so they come out golden brown.
    • To make the crispy wontons shiny, lightly brush them with some vegetable oil or any neutral oil.

    Instructions

Below are step-by-step instructions on how to make apple cinnamon wontons:

Slice unpeeled apples into thin matchsticks and then finely dice them.

    • Freezer friendly? These apple cinnamon wontons can be frozen for up to 3 months. To freeze: let them cool down completely and then store them in a single layer into a freezer-safe bag resting on a baking sheet. Once they're frozen solid, remove the baking sheet. To reheat from frozen: re-bake them from frozen at 350 F for 10-15 minutes until hot.

    Pairing Suggestions

    These serve well with:

    • coffee, tea or milk
    • fresh fruits
    • cookies like cinnamon oat cookies
    • cakes like dairy-free vanilla bundt cake, dairy-free castella cake or chocolate zucchini oat bread
    • pastries

    FAQ

Can I make these in advance?

These are best enjoyed fresh but they can be made up to 4 days in advance and stored into an airtight container in the fridge. To reheat: re-bake in the oven at 350 F for 5-10 minutes until hot.

Can I deep fry the wontons?

These apple cinnamon wontons can be deep fried. To deep fry: heat 2 cups or 500 ml of vegetable oil in a large pan until 350 F with a digital instant read thermometer. Deep fry the wontons in small batches until golden brown, 1-2 minutes per side. Remove the fried wontons with a slotted spoon and transfer to a wire rack or paper towel lined plate to drain off excess oil.

    Can I freeze uncooked wontons?

Uncooked wontons can be frozen for up to 6 months. To freeze: store the raw wontons in a single layer into a freezer-safe bag resting on a baking sheet. Then freeze and once frozen solid, remove the baking sheet. To cook from frozen: follow recipe instructions and add a couple more minutes to the baking time.

Yes, this is a very tasty treat. My dilemma is that after being stored for only a day, the fritters came out of the air tight container soggy. How can I re-crisp them?

How far in advance can you make these? Or are they better warm?
