This dragon fruit smoothie features a blend of red dragon fruit (aka pitaya), a variety of berries, apple, banana, yogurt, milk of choice and maple syrup!

It's absolutely delicious, fruity and so refreshing for breakfast or as a dessert! Perfect for hot summer days when you need something to cool off with.

Great whole family and for picky-eaters like kids if you want to sneak in more color and fiber into their diets.

    dragon fruit smoothie

I'm using red dragon fruit which is known as "Dragon fruit Hylocereus". That's what gives this vibrant smoothie its color. But you can use any dragon fruit you enjoy!

Other dragon fruit breeds include white dragon fruit, red-flesh dragon fruit, pink dragon fruit and yellow skin dragonfruit. Tip: the best season to get in-season dragon fruit is the summer time!

    Ingredients & Substitutes

Please scroll down to below recipe card for exact measurements.

    • Fresh Dragon Fruit (aka Pitaya): feel free to use any kind of ripe dragon fruit. I like using the red-skinned kind with the white flesh. Frozen dragon fruit will also work as a substitute.
    • Strawberries: fresh or frozen ripe strawberries will work.
    • Blueberries: fresh or frozen ripe blueberries will work.
    • Apple: any apple breed will work for this such as gala apple, honey crisp, red apple, fuji apples, etc.
    • Banana: ripe or unripened both work. Ripe ones will yield a sweeter smoothie. If you have frozen bananas, those work even better!
    • Yogurt: or substitute with plain yogurt or Greek yogurt. If you're dairy-free, substitute with vegan yogurt
    • Milk: or substitute with oat milk, almond milk, macadamia nut milk or soy milk if you're dairy-free.
    • Maple syrup: or substitute with honey if you're not vegan.
    • Ice cubes

    Expert Tips

    • Pick in-season ripe dragon fruit, the skin colour is even and that there are no uneven blotches of colour and little greening except for at the sides. The fruit shouldn't be too firm or it's not ripe. Avoid dragon fruit with wrinkled or shrivelled skin as it's over ripe.
    • Use frozen berries for an icy cold thick smoothie and for ease.
    • Dice up the bananas, apples and dragon fruit for an smooth blend.
    • Use a high power blender for an easy blending process.
    • Start by blending on low speed and then increase to high speed so the fruits don't get stuck.
    • Use a blender stick to help you move the fruits around if they get stuck.

    Instructions

Below are step-by-step instructions on how to make dragon fruit smoothie:

    1. Pour all the ingredients into a high power blender.
    2. Blend on low speed first and then increase to high speed. Blend until smooth and feel free to use a blender stick to help you if the fruits get stuck.
    3. Transfer and divide into drinking glasses and enjoy!

    Storage

    • This is best enjoyed fresh or the smoothie will begin to separate but you can mix it up again.
    • Leftover dragon fruit smoothie can last up to 1-2 days stored in an airtight container in the fridge.
    • Freezer-friendly? Yes, dragon fruit smoothie can be frozen in a freezer-friendly bag for up to 3 months. To enjoy, thaw it in the fridge overnight.

    Pairing Suggestions

Dragon fruit smoothie serves well on its own but can be served with these other ideas:

    • in a smoothie bowl with other toppings like chia seeds, nuts, nut butter, other fruits
    • fresh fruit like oranges, apples, more berries, other exotic fruits like lychee
    • toast or croissant
    • cereal
    • oatmeal
    • muesli
    • yogurt bowl

    FAQ

Can I make this dragon fruit smoothie in advance?

You can make this dragon fruit smoothie up to 1 day in advance. You will have to remix the smoothie with a spoon. Any longer than that and the smoothie won't taste fresh.

Where can I buy dragon fruit?

Many Asian grocery stores and select Western grocers will carry a variety of dragon fruit.

What can I do with leftover dragon fruit?

You can cut it into cubes and freeze them in a reusable container for future smoothies or recipes.
