Watermelon milk is made of plant-based milk (to avoid curdling), ripe watermelon and a liquid sweetener of your choice, like maple syrup or honey. Since it's made with plant-based milk, it's dairy-free making it enjoyable for all!
This refreshing drink is perfect on a hot summer day when you want to cool down or when watermelon season is at its peak! It's one of my favourite fruit drinks to have when I want something sweet.
This is a chilled beverage sold in Korean, Japanese or Taiwanese convenience stores or at Asian grocery stores in tetra packs. It's very popular among kids and adults for it's sweet milky taste.
My simple recipe is delicious and not too sweet! This refreshing drink is perfect as long as you use a sweet ripened watermelon. If you don't, it may not be as sweet and you may need to rely on the maple syrup to make it sweeter.
I also recommend not using dairy-milk as it can easily curdle from this particular fruit. Use a plant-based milk instead.
Ingredients & Substitutes
Please scroll down to below recipe card for exact measurements.
- Fresh Seedless Ripe Watermelon: make sure the watermelon has been chilled and isn't sitting at room temperature or you can add ice cubes to your drink to make it cold.
- Non-dairy milk: oat milk, almond milk or any flavorless nut milk can work. I would strongly advise not using dairy milk as it curdles with the watermelon juice
- Maple Syrup: or substitutes with honey or any liquid sweetener that you enjoy.
Expert Tips
- Choose a fresh ripened sweet smelling watermelon. This makes all the difference! I recommend buying watermelons during watermelon season which is between May to September.
- To choose a ripe and sweet watermelon: look for yellow webbing on the skin that is also dark green. Make sure to smell the watermelon and if it smells sweet, get that one!
- Use a high powered blender so it can easily and smoothly grind up the watermelon into a smooth beverage.
- Feel free to run the beverage through a fine sieve if you want the drink to become smoother.
- Chill the watermelon in the fridge, so it's cold enough for the chilled drink or add ice cubes if you didn't chill it.
Instructions
Below are step-by-step instructions on how to make watermelon milk:
- Add all the ingredients into a blender and blend on high until smooth.
- Divide and pour between two tall glasses and enjoy fresh!
Storage
- Leftovers can last up to 2 days in the fridge stored in an airtight container.
- Freezer-friendly? I don't recommend freezing leftover watermelon milk as the freezer will change the texture of the ground watermelon fibres.
Pairing Suggestions
This watermelon milk serves well with:
- fruits
- desserts like cakes, cookies, pastries or danishes
- toast with jam or nut butter
- ice cream, gelato or frozen yogurt
FAQ
Yes, feel free to use strawberries, cherries, blueberries, or banana.
This can be made in advance and stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. You'll just need to re-mix the drink using a whisk before enjoying.
I don't recommend using dairy milk for this watermelon milk recipe as it will quickly curdle with the fruit juice.
