    Authentic Thai Iced Tea

Last Modified: May 27, 2021 - Published by: christieathome

Authentic Thai Iced Tea. A delicious, refreshing sweetened milk tea. Highly addictive and great a morning beverage. My version has the option to be dairy-free.

This is one of my favourite ways to make Thai Iced Tea from scratch. Therefore I am sharing my EASY way to make this! That way you can save yourself some money!

    thai iced tea

Thai Iced Tea originates from Thailand but many South East Asian countries have their own version of it to some degree.

For instance, Hong Kong has it's HK Style Milk Tea where they use normal tea leaves with evaporated milk and sugar to sweeten it. In addition, Malaysia has their rendition of this drink and if you ever visit, you should watch how they pour the drink from each metal cup to cool it down and to make it frothy!

If you reside outside of Asia, Thai restaurants or South East Asian restaurants will usually serve this drink anywhere between $2-4 dollars. But now I'm sharing a recipe so that you can make some Thai Iced Tea at home!

Contrary to what you may think, you will only need 4 ingredients to make this and ten minutes of your time! It's a great alternative to coffee and I would actually recommend drinking this in the morning. It's definitely not an evening drink or you will be up for hours!

I hope you enjoy this recipe and don't forget to check out my other recipes below!

What is the flavour of Thai Iced Tea?

Thai Iced Tea tastes like a very steeped black tea and sweetened with the condensed milk. Additionally, it tastes milky thanks to the evaporated milk and served cold over ice. It's absolutely delicious and almost addictive if you ask me.

Does aΒ Thai iced teaΒ have caffeine?

Yes. If you want to make a decaf version use decaf black tea leaves.

    Is Thai Iced Tea vegan?

The authentic version is not. Nevertheless, I do share the following ingredients to make it dairy-free or vegan.

You'll need condensed coconut milk and evaporated coconut milk by Nature's Charm.

Where can I purchase these ingredients?

Black Thai Tea Leaves can be purchased online. I will share the kind they use in Thailand to make this special drink. As a substitute, you may use normal black tea leaves.

Condensed milk can be bought at most Asian or Western grocers in the canned aisle.

Evaporated milk can be bought at most Asian or Western grocers in the canned aisle.

    evaporate milk

To make this Thai iced teaΒ recipe dairy-free or vegan, you will need to swap out the condensed and evaporated milk for condensed and evaporated coconut milk. Both of these products can be bought online as they are tricky to find at the grocer.

Moreover, the following Thai iced teaΒ ingredients are required:

    • 2 cups water
    • 3 tablespoon Thai Tea leaves or black tea leaves
    • 2 tablespoon condensed milk (or condensed coconut milk if vegan or dairy-free)
    • Two tablespoon evaporated milk (or evaporated coconut milk if vegan or dairy-free)
    • 2 cups ice

Required: Small pot, tea strainer, coffee filters

How to make Thai Iced Tea

Firstly, in your tea strainer, line it with a coffee filter. This is important as it prevents the tiny pieces of the tea leaves from escaping into your iced tea.

Secondly fill the lined tea strainer with the tea leaves. Place the strainer into the small pot and fill the pot with 2 cups of water. Bring it a boil.

Thirdly boil your tea until it's very dark brown, about 5 minutes. The tea needs to be steeped.

In two separate glasses, fill them each with 1 tablespoon of condensed milk followed by ice cubes.

Mmmm looks refreshing, Christie! I've never had authentic Thai iced tea -- usually it's super bright orange with food colouring, but I love how yours is way more natural!
