If you love Greek food and tofu, then this Greek-style tofu dish is for you! The tofu is deliciously marinated in olive oil, lemon juice, dried oregano, dried basil, garlic powder and onion powder and pan-fried.

It's really easy to make with minimal ingredients and the cooking process is simple! I love making this easy tofu recipe when I want to go meatless some days or when my husband requests it.

This dish is best served over Greek rice or Greek potatoes with fresh vegetables or a salad and some tahini dressing or even Tzatziki sauce if you're not vegan.

    Ingredients & Substitutes

Please scroll down to below recipe card for exact measurements.

    • Extra Firm Smoked Tofu: or substitute with extra firm tofu as a last resort
    • Tahini Dressing: store bought or feel free to use homemade tahini dressing. You can buy this at most grocery stores or online.
    • Extra virgin olive oil: for pan frying

    Greek Tofu Marinade

    • Extra virgin olive oil: I wouldn't suggest substituting with any other oil as it offers a wonderful olive flavor to the dish.
    • Fresh lemon juice: freshly squeezed lemon juice is really important for this dish and avoid using the artificial kind.
    • Onion powder: the powder form seasons the tofu better than normal onions.
    • Garlic powder: or substitute with minced garlic
    • Dried basil: avoid using the fresh herb
    • Dried oregano: avoid using the fresh kind
    • Salt and black pepper

    Expert Tips

    • Pat dry the tofu to remove excess moisture which dilute the marinade.
    • Mix the marinade ingredients before adding the tofu. This evenly distributes the ingredients.
    • Let the tofu marinate overnight for best results.
    • Avoid using medium-high heat or you can easily burn the tofu.
    • Reheat the leftover marinade and use it as a pairing sauce!

    Instructions

    1. Slice smoked tofu into ¼-inch thin strips and pat dry with clean paper towel to remove excess moisture.
    2. In a resealable container, whisk together tofu marinade ingredients. Add sliced tofu and allow this to marinade for at least 1 hour or overnight for best results.
    3. Heat olive oil in a large pan on medium heat. Pan fry tofu until golden brown on each side, approximately 5-7 minutes each side. To reuse the leftover marinade, pour it into the pan after you've cooked the tofu and bring it to a simmer and pour it over the cooked tofu.
    4. Serve hot with your favorite fixings like Greek rice, Greek potatoes, salad and/or tahini dressing.

    Storage

    • Leftovers will last up to 4 days stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. To reheat, microwave for 2-3 minutes until hot or reheat in a pan on medium heat.
    • Freezer-friendly? This can be stored in a freezer friendly bag and frozen up to 3 months or until you see freezer burn. To reheat, defrost it and reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop in a pan.

    Pairing Ideas

    This dish serves well with:

    • Greek-style rice, white rice, brown rice or cauliflower rice
    • Garden salad or greek salad or any fresh vegetables
    • Greek-style potatoes
    • Garlic bread
    • Tzatziki sauce or tahini sauce

    FAQ

Can I make this in advance?

Yes, you can marinate the tofu 1-4 nights in advance and when you're ready to enjoy, simply pan fry according to recipe card instructions.

Can I substitute the tofu with another protein?

This marinade is pretty versatile and it can work with chicken, shrimp, fish, or pork.

Can I air fry the tofu?

I wouldn't recommend it since the tofu is sliced so thinly, the air fryer may make it too crispy unless that's what you're looking for.
