Kujirai Ramen. Bouncy instant ramen noodles cooked in a luscious creamy cheesy sauce with runny egg, green onions with optional garlic.

This simple ramen hack is so surprisingly flavourful, delicious, and only takes 3 minutes to cook!

    Kujirai ramen origin

Where did Kujirai ramen come from? Kujirai style ramen originates from a Japanese comic or manga and has become wildly popular for its ease, minimal ingredients, and tastiness! The character in the comic uses a smaller amount of water to make his ramen along with the seasoning and now this idea is trending with all sorts of variations.

    Other variations!

I’ve seen one version made like this, but they added additional toppings like sausage and mushrooms. So feel free to add more toppings such as spam, ham, tofu, cooked minced beef, pork or chicken, vegetables and more!

    Easy and minimal ingredients

This Kujirai style ramen has become a new favourite of mine, when it comes to ramen hacks! It’s so easy and requires very few ingredients to elevate your basic ramen.

    Creamy and Luscious

The creaminess from the American cheese and runny egg mixed with the ramen water create a luxurious luscious sauce. This ramen is not your typical soupy ramen. It’s more on the stir fry side as we are using half the amount of water that is usually used. In addition, the green onions and garlic (optional) add such a lovely aromatic to this dish.

    What you’ll need

For this Kujirai ramen recipe you’ll need the following ingredients:

    • Korean spicy soup based instant ramen, Jin Ramen or Shin Ramen work well!
    • Instant ramen seasoning packet
    • Instant ramen dried vegetable flakes
    • Egg
    • American cheese
    • Water
    • Green onions
    • Garlic

    How to make Kujirai Ramen

Below are brief steps with visuals to show you how to make Kujirai ramen. Please scroll down to the recipe card below to find full instructions and details.

In a shallow pan, add water, instant ramen seasoning, instant dried vegetable flakes, and garlic. Bring to a rolling simmer over low-medium heat. Do not turn heat past this or it’ll evaporate the water quickly.

Once the water comes to a low simmer, add instant ramen. Cook instant ramen on each side for about 20-30 seconds.

    Loosen noodles and once loosened.

Crack an egg in the middle.

Cover with a lid to cook the egg for 1 minute.

Once the egg whites are opaque, add sliced cheese and green onions. Cook for 1 more minute. Enjoy!

    Cooking Tips

Below are tips on making this Kujirai style ramen recipe:

    Have ingredients prepared

Since this ramen recipe cooks very quickly in under 3-4 minutes, have all your ingredients prepared and ready to go. You don’t want to have overcooked ramen noodles!

    Low medium heat is key!

Since we are only cooking this ramen in very shallow water, we don’t want to turn the heat so high it evaporates by the time you add your noodles. In fact, if you do, you won’t have enough water to make that creamy sauce.

Add cheese and green onions after egg cooks

This prevents the cheese from burning allowing it to emulsify with your ramen water to create that creamy sauce. We also don’t want to overcook the green onions as they offer a wonderful aromatic when they’re not as overly cooked.

    FAQ

Below are frequently asked questions about this recipe:

Can I use any brand of ramen?

Any spicy instant ramen will work. I like using Jin Ramen (it’s my go to) or Shin Ramen. Both are Korean brands.

    May I add more cheese?

I would not recommend more than 2 slices per 1 pack ramen. Anymore and it will result in an overly processed cheese tasting ramen that is quite off putting. I’ve tried it so trust me on this.

Can I use normal cheddar cheese?

    Yes!

    May I omit the garlic?

Yes, it’s optional for added flavour.

Can I make this in the microwave?

    Yes! read below for instructions.

You can also make Kujirai ramen microwave friendly!

Simply add water, instant ramen with the seasoning, dried veggie flakes and garlic (optional) into a large microwave safe bowl.

Cover it with plastic wrap. Heat it for 1 minute on high. Carefully peel back the plastic wrap and watch for steam.

Then loosen the noodles and make a well in the middle. Crack the egg into the well and poke a hole in the yolk (to prevent it from exploding).

Cover with plastic wrap again and poke some more holes into the plastic to allow the steam to escape. Microwave for another 2-2:30 minutes.

Uncover and layer on the cheese and garnish with green onions. Enjoy!
