This cold, refreshing drink is believed to be created in 2012 by Boba Guys, located in San Francisco, after they realized there was nothing like it. It has become a hit since!

When it's strawberry season, I love to elevate my classic matcha latte with fresh strawberries! The sweet strawberries and milk perfectly balance the grassy notes of the matcha and make for a stunning red, white, and green latte.

    Why This Recipe

    • Macerating strawberries with sugar brings out the natural fruit juices for more flavor!
    • I've tested this with various grades of matcha powder and I recommend using ceremonial matcha powder for the best results.
    • My recipe uses plant-based milk, like oat or almond milk, to prevent curdling. However, you can also use dairy milk - just make sure it's very cold and enjoy immediately so it doesn't curdle.
    • Better than the café!

    Ingredients & Substitutes

Please scroll to the recipe card below for exact measurements.

    ingredients to make this recipe
    • Strawberries: It's important to use fresh, ripe, and vibrant strawberries for the best taste. I recommend using strawberries during strawberry season, which is May to October. Substitution: Thawed frozen strawberries can work too.
    • Matcha Powder: I recommend using ceremonial matcha powder for best results and for a vibrant green color. Substitution: Everyday matcha powder for a more affordable option. Avoid using culinary matcha or you'll get a muddy-green color and the results aren't as tasty.
    • Oat Milk: I recommend using plain oat milk so it won't curdle with the fruit. Substitution: Almond milk. You can use dairy milk but make sure it's ice-cold and drink the latte immediately so it doesn't have time to curdle.
    • White Granulated Sugar: The fine sugar crystals help crush the berries and pull out the natural sweetness from the strawberries. Substitution: Granulated cane sugar.
    • Ice Cubes
    • Hot Water: The ideal temperature of the water should be around 176ºF (86ºC) to dilute the matcha. Avoid using boiling water as it can make the matcha taste bitter.

    Instructions

Below are step-by-step instructions on how to make a strawberry matcha latte:

Add the strawberries and sugar to a tall 16-oz drinking glass. Using a muddler, crush the strawberries until they release their juices and form a purée.
    1. Macerate the strawberries: Add the strawberries and sugar to a tall 16-oz drinking glass. Using a muddler, crush the strawberries until they release their juices and form a purée. (If you don't have a muddler, finely chop or purée them in a blender, then mix with the sugar in a glass).
Add ice cubes over the puréed strawberries, then pour in the milk. Set aside.
    1. Add ice and milk: Add ice cubes over the puréed strawberries, then pour in the milk. Set aside.
Sift the matcha powder into a small bowl. Add hot water (about 176ºF / 86ºC measured with a digital instant-read thermometer), then whisk in a zigzag motion until frothy, about 30 seconds.
    1. Whisk the matcha with water: Sift the matcha powder into a small bowl. Add hot water (about 176ºF / 86ºC, measured with a digital instant-read thermometer), then whisk in a zigzag motion until frothy, about 30 seconds.
Pour the matcha liquid over the milk. Stir and enjoy!
    1. Assemble the drink: Pour the matcha liquid over the milk. Stir and enjoy!

    Expert Tips

    • Choose fresh, ripe, sweet-smelling strawberries for the best taste.
    • Use ceremonial or everyday-grade matcha powder for best taste and appearance.
    • Before crushing the strawberries, chop them into smaller pieces so you can easily crush them into a purée.
    • Crush the strawberries into a smooth purée for best texture. You can also use a blender or food processor.
    • Sift the matcha powder before whisking with water to avoid clumps of matcha.
    • Use a matcha whisk or a regular whisk to break up any matcha clumps and to enhance flavor.

    Variations

    • Less-sweet version: Use less sugar or omit the sugar altogether.
    • Blueberry version: Replace the strawberries with fresh, ripe blueberries.

    Storage

    • Leftover strawberry matcha latte can last up to 4 days when stored in an airtight container in the fridge. Store the strawberry mixture, matcha liquid, and the milk in separate containers and assemble the drink fresh for serving.
    • Freezer-friendly? Strawberry matcha latte is not ideal for freezing as the strawberries will change in texture.

    Pairing Suggestions

This strawberry matcha latte pairs well with:

    • Fresh strawberries, blueberries, or bananas.
    • Waffles, pancakes, crepes, or French toast.
    • Vanilla cake or cupcakes, croissants, danishes, shortbread cookies, or Strawberry Sando.
    • Ice cream, yogurt, gelato.
    • Strawberry ice cream mochi.

    FAQ

Can I make strawberry matcha latte in advance?

Strawberry matcha latte can be prepared up to 4 days in advance when stored in an airtight container in the fridge. Store the puréed strawberries, milk, and matcha liquid into separate containers. When ready to enjoy, assemble the drink according to the instructions.

Can I add boba to this strawberry matcha latte?

Add in ¼ cup of cooked boba to the drink before adding the ice.

This was good and so much cheaper than buying at the restaurant. It was a little heavy on the matcha for my taste but I'll make it again with a smidge less matcha. It might have been the brand I bought or maybe my strawberries weren't set enough.

Great recipe to tweak to your tastes.

Hi, is this recipe supposed to yield 12oz or 16oz? I think I have the same glass as yours in the photos and I have a 1.5in gap from the top, even with ice. Also, can you share which matcha and plant milk brand you use? Please let me know! Thank you!

Otherwise, this recipe helped me make my first strawberry matcha latte! This is going to save me $20 every week! Thank you.

Hello! This yields a 16oz glass. I am using matcha by the brand Soar Organics, I prefer their Uji Ceremonial grade matcha. As for the milk, I'm using plain almond milk by Silk. I hope you enjoy it, Joyce!
