Strawberry matcha latte features sweet puréed strawberries combined with the grassy notes of matcha, creamy milk and ice cubes. It's stunning to look at with the green, white and red colored layers!
When it's strawberry season, I love to make this chilled beverage to elevate my classic matcha latte! It's so delicious, refreshing and perfect for summer. Also, it's a fantastic iced beverage to make to impress guests or friends!
The sweet strawberries and the creamy milk balance out the bitterness of the matcha making it taste so good!
This drink can also be made dairy-free by simply substituting with a plant-based milk that you enjoy, such as oat milk or a nut milk so it's enjoyable for all.
The best part is that this cold refreshing drink requires only 6-simple ingredients saving you a good $7-8 if you were to buy this popular latte at a bubble tea shop, like at Boba Guys!
Ingredients & Substitutions
Please scroll down to below recipe card for exact measurements.
- Fresh Ripe Strawberries: when shopping for strawberries at the grocery store, make sure to source vibrant red ones that are sweet smelling. These will give you the best tasting latte. It's best to shop for strawberries during strawberry season which is between May to October. You may also substitute with frozen strawberries.
- Matcha powder: I recommend using Ceremonial matcha powder for best quality but this type of matcha powder is most expensive. If you're shopping for matcha powder, please note that Culinary matcha is the most affordable but lowest in quality giving it a more brownish-green color and is mainly used for baking but it can be used. Or spend a bit more money and get Everyday matcha powder which will work well for this recipe and will give you a more vibrant green matcha powder.
- Milk: or substitute with a dairy-free milk of your choice like oat milk, almond milk or any nut milk. I would avoid using soy milk since it has a stronger taste but if that's what you enjoy, go for it!
- White granulated sugar: or substitute with honey or maple syrup for a natural sweetened version.
- Ice cubes
- Hot boiling water: to dilute the matcha powder and make it frothy.
Recommended Equipment
- Matcha whisk, or whisk, or electric frothing whisk
- Sift
- Tall glass
- Measuring spoons or kitchen scale
- Muddler or blender/food processor
- Knife
- Cutting board
- Wide drinking straw
Expert Tips
- Use quality matcha powder that you enjoy! I recommend using Ceremonial matcha powder for the best quality.
- Chop the strawberries into quarters or into even smaller pieces before crushing. This helps you crush the berries into a purée.
- Make sure the strawberries are well crushed so you’re not drinking chunks unless you prefer that.
- Use a blender or food processor for extra smooth strawberry purée.
- For an evenly dissolved matcha liquid, I recommend sifting the matcha powder before whisking.
- Use a matcha whisk, whisk, or electric whisk to make the matcha liquid extra frothy. Do not skip this step!
Instructions
Below are step-by-step instructions on how to make strawberry matcha latte:
- In a tall glass, add strawberries and white granulated sugar and crush them with a muddler until they’re pureed. If you don’t have a muddler, finely chop or purée the strawberries in a blender and mix them in the glass with the sugar.
- Then add ice cubes on top of the puréed strawberries.
- Pour milk over the ice and set aside.
- Then sift matcha powder into a small bowl. Add hot boiling water to the matcha and whisk until frothy for 30 seconds.
Pour the matcha liquid over the milk. Stir to enjoy!
Storage
- This latte is best consumed immediately or same day.
- Leftover latte can last up to 2 days stored in an airtight container or mason jar in the refrigerator.
- Freezer-friendly? I don't recommend freezing strawberry matcha latte as the strawberries will change in texture.
