Matcha crepes are found at select dessert shops or brunch restaurants but they're usually quite pricey as they're loaded with toppings. However, you can easily make them at home for fraction of the cost and in little time!
My husband actually created this recipe and I am sharing it here with you all so you can make some tasty crepes yourself.
He is an avid crepe maker and loves to make crepes for me as a special treat! I personally love enjoying matcha crepes with chocolate nutella and strawberries but you can add any other toppings you wish!
Ingredients & Substitutes
Please scroll down to below recipe card for exact measurements.
- Butter: or substitute with neutral oil like avocado oil or canola oil for greasing the pan
Crepe Batter
- All-purpose flour: or substitute with whole wheat flour if you wish.
- Matcha powder: I recommend using Ceremonial matcha powder for best quality but this type of matcha powder is most expensive. If you're shopping for matcha powder, please note that Culinary matcha is the most affordable but lowest in quality giving it a more brownish-green color and is mainly used for baking but it can be used. Or spend a bit more money and get Everyday matcha powder which will work well for this recipe and will give you a more vibrant green matcha powder.
- Large eggs
- Milk of choice: dairy-milk, nut milk or oat milk work well.
- Melted butter: or substitute with dairy-free butter or neutral oil of your choice.
- White granulated sugar: or substitute with maple syrup or honey
- Cold water: it must be cold water to keep the batter runny.
- Vanilla extract
- Salt
Expert Tips
- Use matcha powder that you would enjoy and remember that certain grades yield different results. I recommend Everyday grade matcha and above for best results.
- Sift in the matcha powder after combining the flour and salt. This prevents any clumps.
- Do not over mix the batter. This leads to less chewy crepes.
- Allow the pan to get hot enough before adding your crepe batter.
- Swirl the batter quickly in the pan so you can form a thin pancake.
- Don't overcook the crepe. Once it's becomes solid and slightly golden brown flip it over with a large spatula.
Instructions
Below are step-by-step instructions on how to make matcha crepes:
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Sift in the matcha powder and whisk it into the flour mixture.
- Then add in the wet ingredients. Whisk together until batter comes together. Do not over mix. It should be runny and not thick.
- Grease a medium size pan (about 8-inches wide) and bring to medium heat.
- Once pan is hot, pour ⅓ cup into the pan. Swirl the batter to form a thin crepe. If you have a crepe spreader that would be the best tool to help flatten the batter. Fry until the bottom is cooked.
- Flip over and fry on the other side until cooked. Repeat this for the remaining batter.
- Enjoy with your favourite toppings, such as nutella, nut butter, maple syrup, honey, sugar and fresh fruit (like bananas or berries).
Storage
- Leftover crepes will last up to 4 days stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. To reheat, microwave for 2-3 minutes until hot or reheat in a pan on medium heat.
- Freezer-friendly? Matcha crepes can be frozen for up to 2 months. Allow them to cool completely and store them into freezer-safe bags with parchment paper between each crepe. To enjoy, microwave or pan-fry from frozen until they're warm through out on low-medium heat.
Topping Ideas
Here is a list of topping ideas for your matcha crepes:
- butter or dairy-free butter
- maple syrup or honey
- nut butters like nutella, peanut butter or almond butter
- icing sugar, white sugar or cane sugar sprinkled on top
- jams like strawberry jam, peach jam or yuzu jam
- fresh fruit like strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries, bananas, peaches or nectarines
- whipped cream, ice cream, or frozen yogurt
- nuts like sliced almonds or crushed peanuts or cashews
- chocolate chips or cacao nibs

FAQ
This can be made in advance and stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. To enjoy, reheat it in the microwave until warm throughout or in a pan on the stovetop on low-medium heat.
Absolutely, you can! I would just suggest adding 0.5 more teaspoon of vanilla extract to make it taste more like vanilla.
