These Chinese five spice potatoes are packed with a garlicky, savory flavors thanks to the garlic powder, Chinese five-spice powder and salt. They're easily made with very simple ingredients and that's why I love this potato recipe.

So what's Chinese five-spice powder? It's a ground mixture of star anise, cinnamon, sichuan peppercorns and cloves. You can easily find this ingredient at most grocers.

    Chinese Five Spice Taters

Chinese five spice is commonly used in Chinese cooking to flavor many dishes, especially meats. But it pairs so well with the average spud, especially when roasted in the oven.

These potatoes are a great side dish or snack that you can enjoy with some Japanese mayo. It's so tasty and satisfying! The best part is that it's such a simple recipe with big flavors!

    Ingredients & Substitutes

Please scroll down to below recipe card for exact measurements.

    • Yukon gold potatoes: these type of potatoes are the best for roasting. They're also known as "yellow potatoes" or "gold potatoes".
    • Chinese Five Spice Powder: It's a ground powder mixture of star anise, cinnamon, Sichuan peppercorns and cloves and often used in Chinese cooking. You can find this ingredient online or at many Asian and Western grocery stores.
    • Garlic powder: I recommend using garlic powder instead of minced garlic as the minced garlic will burn creating a bitter flavor. Or substitute with onion powder if you don't have garlic powder.
    • Salt
    • Neutral oil: like avocado oil, sunflower oil, peanut oil, vegetable oil or canola oil. Avoid olive oil or any heavy scented oils.
    • Green onions: for garnishing

    Expert Tips

    • Use fresh hard potatoes that are not green or sprouting in any spots. If they're green or sprouting, avoid using those potatoes as they can contain toxins!
    • Use a sharp potato peeler! I recently found out my potato peeler was pretty dull and when I sharpened my potato peeler, it make the potato peeling process so much quicker!
    • Make sure the oven is preheated before you bake the potatoes.
    • Evenly dice the potatoes into cubes that are the same size for even roasting.
    • Use your hands to massage the oil and spices into the potatoes for even seasoning.
    • Line the baking sheet with parchment paper for easy clean up!

    Instructions

Below are step-by-step instructions on how to make Chinese Five Spice Taters:

    1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
    2. Peel potatoes and dice them into 2-cm cubes.
    3. Spread diced potatoes evenly on a large baking sheet. Evenly sprinkle salt, garlic powder and Chinese five spice on top. Drizzle vegetable oil on top.
    4. Using your hands, massage spices and oils into each tater until evenly coated.
    5. Bake on the middle rack for 30 minutes until golden crispy brown, no flipping required.
    6. Garnish with chopped green onions and serve hot with Japanese mayo or regular mayo and enjoy!

    Storage

    • Leftovers will last up to 4 days stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. To reheat: microwave for 2-3 minutes until hot or reheat in a pan on medium heat.
    • Freezer friendly? This can be stored in a freezer friendly bag after cooling down and frozen up to 3 months or until you see freezer burn. To reheat, air fry or bake in the oven from frozen at 400 degrees F until hot throughout.

    Pairing Suggestions

Chinese Five Spice Taters serve well with:

    • starters like egg rolls, crab rangoons, egg drop soup, hot and sour soup
    • white or brown rice, cauliflower rice, fried rice, chow mein, or lo mein
    • cooked vegetables like bok choy, spicy garlic bok choy, choy sum, gai lan, garlic green beans or stir fried snow pea leaves.
    • protein dishes like Mongolian Chicken, Honey Sesame Chicken, Ginger Chicken,  Orange Chicken, Mongolian Beef, Honey Walnut Shrimp, Bang Bang Shrimp, Soy Garlic Tofu, Chinese Braised Tofu and more!

    FAQ

Can I make this in advance?

This can be made in advance and stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. To enjoy, reheat it in the microwave, air fryer or oven at 400 F until hot throughout.

    Where do I store potatoes?

Store potatoes in their packaging in a cool and dark place. Avoid warm areas that are brightly lit or they will rot faster.

Thanks so much Heidi! I love using avocado oil to bake as it can withstand a higher cooking temperature without smoking.
