    • 📖 Recipe

Watermelon milk is a cold and tasty beverage that features plant-based milk, ripe watermelon and a liquid sweetener of your choice, like maple syrup or honey.

This refreshing drink is perfect on a hot summer day when you want to cool down or when watermelon season is at its peak - June to August! It's one of my favorite drinks to enjoy.

It's also dairy-free making it, enjoyable for all! I don't recommend using dairy milk for fruit milk recipes as the fruit acidity will naturally cause curdling.

This is also a chilled beverage sold in Korean, Japanese or Taiwanese convenience stores or at Asian grocery stores in tetra packs. Popular among kids and adults for its sweet milky taste.

My recipe is delicious and sweet, but not too sweet. It's foolproof as long as you use fully ripened watermelon. If you don't, it may not be as sweet and you'll need to add more sweetener to taste.

    Ingredients & Substitutes

Please scroll down to below recipe card for exact measurements.

    • Fresh Ripe Seedless Watermelon: this is the main ingredient, so choose a fresh ripe watermelon that doesn't contain seeds. Also chill the melon the night before for a refreshing taste.
    • Plain Oat Milk: or substitute with plain almond milk or a flavorless plant-based milk of choice. Avoid using soy milk, coconut milk or dairy-milk. Dairy milk will cause curdling.
    • Maple Syrup: or substitute with honey or a liquid sweetener of your choice. You may use white granulated sugar, but fully dissolve it before enjoying.

    Variations

    • Strawberry version - Replace the watermelon with fresh ripe strawberries (see below under "More like this" for recipe).
    • Banana version - Replace the watermelon with ripe bananas (see below under "More like this" for recipe).

    Expert Tips

    • Choose a fresh, ripened, sweet-smelling watermelon for best taste. I recommend buying watermelons during watermelon season, June to August.
    • To know if a watermelon is ripe and sweet: look for dark green melons with yellow webbing on the skin. Pick a watermelon that smells sweet as this will give you a sweeter taste.
    • Chill the watermelon in the fridge the night before so it's cold enough or add ice cubes if you didn't chill it.
    • Peel away any white watermelon skin from the flesh and evenly dice into small cubes, so it can easily blend.
    • Use a high-powered blender to easily and smoothly purée the watermelon. Or run the watermelon purée through a fine sieve if you want it extra smooth.

    Instructions

Below are step-by-step instructions on how to make watermelon milk:

    1. Add all the ingredients into a blender and blend on high until smooth.
    2. Pour and divide between two tall glasses and enjoy fresh!

    Storage

    • Watermelon milk can last up to 2 days in the fridge stored in an airtight container. To enjoy, mix the beverage again to combine the watermelon and liquids.
    • I don't recommend freezing leftover watermelon milk as the freezer will change the texture of the ground watermelon fibers.

    Pairing Suggestions

This watermelon milk serves well with:

    • fruits
    • desserts like cakes, cookies, pastries or danishes
    • toast with jam or nut butter
    • ice cream, gelato or frozen yogurt

    FAQ

Can I make this in advance?

Watermelon milk can be made in advance and stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. You'll need to mix the drink again, using a whisk before enjoying.

Can I substitute the watermelon with other fruits?

You can substitute the watermelon with strawberries or banana. I recommend referring to my recipes for those - see below under "More like this".

Can I use dairy milk for watermelon milk?

I don't recommend using dairy milk for this watermelon milk recipe as it will quickly curdle with the fruit juice.

Super Simple and delicious. I doubled the recipe and stored it in the fridge in a glass jar. Kept well, I did shake it before serving again.
